I went with synth dreads last year and i ended up with sunburn on my scalp between the dreads which was so not nice!
I really dunno what to do for this year coz I'm definately not going for the hair down thing again! 2008 I came home with one big dusty dread that took about 3/4 conditionings to get the knots to a brushable level :S
    Any suggestions?

I had synth dreads last year and just put a bandana on to cover the top bits from the sun and that worked fine. Plus it kept them from whipping myself and those around me in the face when I got a bit rowdy hehe. If you don't do bandanas then hats is about the best alternative, just find one that looks good and the dreads will keep it on.

My advice to anyone with the big dread/plait question is to go for it, mine didn't ruin my hair at all and a couple of good shampoos got my hair back to normal - granted the process of taking them out and getting to that stage was about two hours but it was my post Download shower, so always takes a bit longer. I won't lie either I did come home with a couple of sores on my head where I'd been hot and they'd rubbed but after the wash I didn't notice them and they were gone in a few days. I will say I was prob hotter in them b'cuz there was a lot of fake hair on my head but being able to pick them up in one go relieved that pretty much instantly, no hair stuck to my face or neck, deffo be dreading up again this year.

Which also begs the question, anyone in the wirral area who's any good at putting them in? PM me please and there'll be some beers/drink or a note or two in it for you! ^_^

I've never had synthetic dreads before so am a complete newbie. Not sure I've got the time (or skill) to make my own and am gonna have to learn to put them in myself, so are there any good ones ready made to buy? I've looked on a couple websites but would love some reccomedations please. I live in Birmingham, so if anyone knows any decent shops round the west mids area too that would be great. Might try falls first to see if they suit me or not. Cheers

Well some of the more seasoned dread-ers may disagree but I got a few packs of the elysee star transitions ones from www.afrocare.com - seeing as I'm not great at making them myself this wasn't bad cost wise, and they lasted for two instillations, probably more if I didn't have earrings that they get caught in lol.  I did have problems with some of the single colour ones unravelling but they aren't hard to re-seal (with straighteners) and if you leave those ones until last you tend to find you have a few left over anyway.

I did pay a friend in cidar to put them in for me though, my main advice would be make sure the person putting them in knows what they're doing, how much hair to use, how tight and how far to plait or they just drop and droop from the scalp, not a good look!  As I've said though they def better than leaving it loose and to make it worth the money I put them in a week or two before download to give them time to settle in and leave them for about 6 weeks, until the epic hot weather passes lol I do miss having them in the rest of the year ^_^

Any style advice for actual dreadlocks? I've been thinking of connecting some synth dreads here and there just to keep it interesting. I have of course got beads, wraps, and the such, but  i'd like something different than what I wear every day.

Never had real ones but love seeing them with additions - watching it being done as well, always looks great. I think adding some bright colours would look good. Not sure if it'd work but maybe wrap some thin ribbon (or similar) around them, like crossed or something? That might make them look a bit different? ^_^

                Hey everyone.

I'm in need of some advice.
I'm looking to buy DE dreads for this festie season (my mate is installing them)
I've been told I need a total coverage of about 120 DE dreads. I need them long length and have three colours i mind, some candy-cane style.

Any experienced makers of synthetic (not wool) dreads that can do this?
Or could you point me in the direction of someone who can?
I've not found much online recently and what I have found is pricey, I know they won't be dirt cheap but still.

                  Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has ever done DE plaits instead of dreads?  And if you have did they turn out ok?

                  Thanks

I made DE plaits out of normal knitting yarn before and mounted them onto falls, they turned out OK but didn't have as much volume to them as dreads do, they were a little bit flat.

If anyone's wanting and roving dreads for this years festival (or if they just want some roving dreads!) then drop me a PM and I can make you some at a discounted price. Really need some extra cash at the moment!

Those are cheaper than anywhere I know :) 120 is a LOT though. I just cheat as I never have them in long. Make them nice around the hair line and just do whatevers everywhere else ;)

I have purple and red hair right now, so I might get synth dreads for DL. I've never shortened them myself though. Is it hard?
I used to be legit. I was too legit. I was too legit to quit.
But now I'm not legit. I'm unlegit. And for that reason, I must quit.

                        Hey :)
I know this thread is mostly for dreads and stuff, but I can't afford to buy them or anything, so are there any cool ways for me to have my hair? Its naturally wavy but gets greasy when straight after 3/4 days?

                          Mohican

To be honest theres not a lot you can do. Maybe tie it back. Or put a hat on once it goes horrid.

Either that or grab a shower once its on its last legs and just have it wavy.

Yeah I was thinking just keep it straight as much as possible, pin my fringe back and wear lots of hats and bandanas. I'll probably have a shower on the friday/saturday depending how I feel. Thanks :)

Can I repeat my question about shortening synth dreads? I'm assuming as long as I seal them (was planning on using an old pair of hair straighteners), they'll be OK?

Helps! I can't afford to get short ones made or done properly or anything

I've done this before. Its not too difficult but make sure you use clingfilm to wrap the separate colours to try and stop any mixing of the colours. And if you are using dyes like crazy colour/directions/manic panic etc then dry them into your hair with a hairdryer as it helps them stick better. Good luck and post a picture!!!!

I'm bleaching my hair tonight as its currently a blue-ish purple but i want it violet and im having a turquoise streak. Hopefully it will still look ok by download :p

                                    Ah that sounds nice!

I will be using directions or manic panic me thinks, thats what the local shop supplies anyways. I've only dyed my hair the one colour before so will be fun experimenting!

Due to being contained within an office where they frown upon creativity, I wont be able to do my hair until the night before we leave for Download, so you may see me on here the Tuesday night having a major crisis ^^
*~* You and I are mortal but Rock & Roll will never die *~*

Haha it takes time to do the rainbow but its worth it when it works. I just did mine purple and turquoise and im so happy with it, it looks awesome Its my uni ball tomorrow so i'm excited to have cool hair for all the photos lol.

Another tip for when you do finally get to do it...wrap all the colours seperately, dry them with the hair dryer, leave in for as long as you can and wash them out one at a time. really does work.

And for the person with the straight hair my advice would be bastiste dry shampoo...quick spray in the morning, brush out and it stops your hair getting greasy and makes it smell nice too :)

                                        Deffo this.
Used this last year and it is a god send.
Make sure you have a natural bristle brush to brush it out with though, because the normal brushes won't get it all out and it looks like you've been attacked with baby powder lol
