Resistance - Owen Sheers
6/10

Enjoyed parts of it, but thought the ending was a bit weak.

    Stephen King

"The Dark Tower 3 - The Waste Lands"  7/10

This series is not at all what I expected...really complex and tough to get your head around the concept...but once the answers start to unravel its really intriguing. Was hoping for a more fantasy-based tale - most of it takes place in our world, or another world that's strikingly similar to our own - but nevertheless the way its written is clever and the adventure is certainly one I want to reach the end of.

Now to tackle number 4 "Wizard and Glass", which is about the same size as Lord of the Rings.

Since my last venture into this thread:
Guernica by Dave Boling - 8/10
Between Shades Of Gray by Ruta Sepetys - 7/10
The Invention Of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick - 8/10
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt - 7/10
The Picture Of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde - 10/10

Next on my list is either The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov or To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Finished A Game of Thrones a week or so ago. 8/10.

Brilliantly written to be fair, with great characterisation and use of perspective. Would have loved to have been surprised by a Cersei or Jaime chapter in there near the end (just for a minute of insight into their perspective, their tensions and rationalising their ambition) but it's doesn't degrade the book.

Only eight because it feels a bit... unstructured in the overall arch. The book ends at a natural point for one character but not for the others. From a cynical perspective it feels a bit "Lost"... I just hope it keeps me engaged over the rest of the books. If it's going to it needs to convince me it's going somewhere and that one character needs to get involved with the others at some point. Otherwise her story will ultimately prove superfluous.

Currently half-way through Jane Bussman's "The Worst Date Ever" about her travelling to Uganda posing as a foreign correspondent because she fancied an American UN diplomat and ended up in the Kony/Museveni warzone. It's brilliant so far. Really brilliant, hilarious, insightful and brilliant.

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen - 5/10

Picked this up last week not knowing about the film actually - it was just on a display in Waterstones (obviously because of the film) and it looked entertaining. Not really. The way the story is told is done much better elsewhere (it's a bit of a variation on the 'book within a book' type thing, I guess). It doesn't really make any of its points that well through the storytelling so has to spoonfeed them to you a couple of times. The characters are all a bit one dimensional. It attempts to do satire but really is neither subtle enough nor blunt enough to make it work well, it all just comes of a bit weak and watery. There's a quite jarring use of a couple of real people that fail to capture anything of their actual personalities in each instance and just left me wondering why they bothered.

It's a bit quirky and a nice easy read. It's not offensively bad. Don't really get why they'd make a movie of it but then they did go and make a movie of One Day so I assume they'll do anything.

9/10, the last few chapters were among the funniest but let the anger dissipate.

James Patterson - The Women's Murder Club - Books 1-9
                   7/10

Every one of these was very enjoyable, if a little samey. I love James Patterson as an author and his style and characters are easy going, easy to relate to and enjoyable to read about. Not up to the standards of the Alex Cross books and nowhere near the complexity level of some other authors, but still enjoyable.

Darren Shan Cirque du Freak/Vampires Assistant. It's a pretty good book, the movie put me off reading the book for a while but I'm quite glad I decided to have a go at it. 6.5/10

Spinward Fringe : origins - free kindle book in the top 100 sorry can't remember the authors name.

7/10 not the longest book but what do you expect for a freebie?? Engaging story which made me keep reading until the early hours on a few nights and contemplate buying the rest of the series when I've read through some of my back catalogue.

Scifi kept light with observations about the interactions between the characters. Worth a read.

Yes, I've read both of them, read them in norwegian, so tought Pillars of the Earth was the namee of the series. Belived that maybe it was the norwegian translation that did'nt quite cut it for me, but after reading The Needle in english, I belive that I just dont enjoy Follets style.

Easy to read, a lovely story. Had me laughing (and crying), any pet lover should read this book on how one furry companion gave somebody light in the darkest corner.
