ORIGINAL: hatecrewdeathroll I finished reading the lost symbol by dan brown last night.......it was actually rubbish[X(] I read that over Christmas. Bit of a disappointment although I was surprised by the ending. Certainly not as good as Angels & Demons and probably The DaVinci Code too.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad I'd give it 8/10, it was pretty good, hard to read though

The Catcher in the Rye- 10/10 Amazing read. Makes you feel so many emotions and the ending is very sweet. Onto Battle Royale.

ORIGINAL: hatecrewdeathroll I finished reading the lost symbol by dan brown last night.......it was actually rubbish[X(] I couldn't get into that AT ALL. However, the manfriend forced me to read Catcher In The Rye. It was pretty sweet, the narrative was funny, but at the same time really f ucking sad. Definately worth a read.

ORIGINAL: Soper Onto Battle Royale. That book is awesome. So much better than the film, in my opinion. Read it last year in about 3 days. Hugely enjoyable stuff.

American Gods is awesome - one of the best I've ever read. If you've not read it try Good Omens which he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett - very funny. Last book I read was the Good Guy by Dean Koontz. Read loads of his stuff when I was younger and picked this up recently. Was pretty disappointed. It cracks along at a good pace but I didn't get much feel for the characters. I'd give it 5/10. Now reading the 2nd Marvel graphic novel of The Stand by Stephen King. If you like Stephen King and comic books this is for you. Artwork is amazing and it's very faithful to the original story. Can't wait for the next Dark Tower one and the first Talisman.

I'm currently reading Bones Of The Hills by Conn Iggulden. It's the third part of a trilogy about Genghis Khan. The first two were brilliant as is this one so far.

I have a dire reading attention span. I'm currently working my way through several books at once. Dr Faustus-Marlowe Gates of Eden-Ethan Coen Various-Edgar Allan Poe The Sense of Beauty-Santayana Various-HP Lovecraft (as usual) I'm sure there are more... Got a nice pile of Carl Hiaasen's stuff waiting to be read, as well as a now out of print book on the Lancashire witch trials.

ORIGINAL: senor monkey rock I can't remember the last book I read largely because I'm reading The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco at the moment and it's just about sucking up all my brain power. Great book but blimey it's hard going in some places. Finally read that last year - a great book, excellentlly written. The last book was I am Ozzy. I'll give it 9.5 out of ten (it tails off at the end), what a laugh. I am currently reading He's a Rebel - a Phil Spector bio., which seems promising so far.

Underground - Haruki Murakami 10/10 Non-fiction about the Tokyo sarin gas attacks, told from various different perspectives: Murakami, some of the victims, workers, and members of the cult. I really loved it, and recommend it to anyone.

Any other recommendations? edit: underworld - ordered. noted Sanshiro to read in the future (by Soseki, was on mura's list - anyone read it?)

Well there is of course Norwegian Wood, which loads of people like. The other two surreal ones I know are Kafka on the Shore and The Wind-up Bird Chronicle. Wind-up is as large as Hard-Boiled, and not everyone likes Kafka. Norwegian Wood is going to be a movie soon too.

Set in 15th century Japan, the protagonist was a stray cat. If you're into Murakami, then you might like that too.
