DLF NBA/Basketball Thread
-
31 July 2011 19:00
Well this thread is going to be lively over the next couple of months. Obviously, the lockout puts any predictions or talk of next season (if there is even going to be one) on hold in the NBA, but there is till plenty to discuss. Where are Dwight and CP3 going to end up next summer, potentially the most competitive NCAA tournament in years which could also lead to an extremely deep draft, and then there's the Olympics to top it all off next year. As in the NFL thread, feel free to talk up your team in here.

The closest NBA teams to Pittsburgh are the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Philadelphia 76ers. I won't support any Cleveland team out of principle and supporting a team with NFL ties not in Pittsburgh still seems wrong. If I ever claim to follow a team it is the Milwaukee Bucks. But er... we don't tend to do so well...

Bucks have some talent, Bogut is as good as any centre who isn't Dwight Howard in the league. Riddled with injuries last season, but they made the play offs the year before, and traded for Stephen Jackson during the draft, so the future looks good for them. Why wont you support a Clevand team? Think of all the legit Lebron hate you could spew out every week.

I know so little about the NBA. The games are usually pretty good though so I might try and get into it next season, if there is one. In terms of support, I always played as the lakers on games but I'd feel cheap just picking them, will hopefully pick one up I like after watching.

Shame that Johnson has lumbered the Hawks with the worst contract in sports for the foreseeable future. If they had the cap room to sign a quality centre so Horford could play PF they would be a major force in the East.

There was some trade chatter about Josh Smith, if he could be shipped for a decent starting 5 (and a solid 3 FA probably) Hawks would be set.

Yeah I heard that, his name is being dropped with loads of teams because he's Howard's best mate and they want to get him as a make weight if he hits FA next summer. Outlaw + Brook Lopez for Smith is the popular one at the minute. EDIT: http://basketball.realgm....iles_Suit_Against_NBPA Better start looking forward to the NCAA.

The players have rejected the latest offer and are now suing the NBA, and even if any agreement is reached in the near future (which it wont) there will be no games until the new year at the earliest. Kiss this season good bye.

Can't blame the players for the lockout, yes they ultimately caused it, but anyone reasonable would've rejected the owners' offers.

Some reports suggest that both sides are trying to get this resolved so the league can start on Christmas day. Don't hold your breath.

CP3 request trade to the Knicks. That's another super team in the making for the east. Paul, Melo, and Stoudamire in a Dantoni offense.

Yeah, that came out after the original report. The trouble with that is if he insists on only moving to the Knicks then he basically has the Hornets by the balls. Their either going to have too let him go into FA and get nothing for him ala LeMong, or accept whatever the Knicks offer for him in trade which will be nothing in the way of value for Paul. There is talk of him being shopped to the Clipper and Celtics instead, but really its all up to him now. Pretty much exactly the same with the Howard situation. Free agency on starts on Friday. Affalo (dreaming) QRich (contented) TMac (oh well) for the Bull please.

Forgot about him. Doubt he will take a mid level when there are teams who can offer more money than us. Lots of talk about Battier to the Heat and Chandler moving to the Celtics which will really shake things up in the East.

Never really paid any attention to NBA, may start this season, have no real knowledge of who our players are or whether they're any good or not. I'll pick a team from the same place as my NFL team, so I'll go with the Nuggets.

[/Steven] Never really paid any attention to NBA, may start this season, have no real knowledge of who our players are or whether they're any good or not. I'll pick a team from the same place as my NFL team, so I'll go with the Nuggets. Your in for a very long season. They have some great young players like Ty Lawson, Affalo, and Gallinari, but they have already lost Wilson Chandler and JR Smith to the Chinses league for this season unless the trade deadline gets put back until their season ends in March, and everything suggests that Nene (your best player) will be gone by the time FA finishes. Will have loads of cap room for next summer though, and with a high lottery pick in what is set to be the deepest draft in years, the future is bright for the Nuggets. As with the NFL, video games are good place to start just to learn the rules/players if your just getting into the NBA, then check out the official website and forums like Real Gm that are great for keeping up to date with whats going on. All the games are far easier to obtain via DL than the NFL I find as well.

Nuggets will likely lose Afflalo, he's getting a lot of interest in FA. Chandler and Smith are FAs too. Nuggets will looks really different in the 2012/13 season. Spurs are likely going to be **** for a few seasons soon, their 2 best players are near retirement.

Chandler and Affalo are restricted FA's, so they can match anything another offers them after a bid is made, and they have the cap space to sign them as well with K Mart and (probably) Nene leaving. That will apply to Chandler also when does get back form China.

Been reading up on Nene, quite a lot of the nuggets fans want him to go to make room for the cap space as they dont deem him worth the money he's demanding.

Looks like Brown is leaving LA (shame as he's a spectacular player to say the least, one day he may have managed to jump through the Staples Center ceiling...) and Affalo might be an option. Also apparently Howard to LA is a possible trade, not keen on potentially losing Gasol though, or Odom for that matter. Same old Steven, he just loves the Kroenke.

They can wait on Chandler until the season ends to see how Gallo turns out, and by all accounts so far they will match anything offered to Affalo by another team. He's a promising defensive guard who can shoot the three, and whilst that is a rare commodity who will be loved by GM's, its not enough to get top dollar, he will probably land a deal that max out at around ten mill at the most, and with the Nuggets shedding almost 30 Million dollars is cap room if Nene leaves after K Mart and Smith, they wont have to worry about really breaking the bank for him. Talk of Paul possibly going to the Clippers. The amount of alley oops to Griffin would be unreal.

Tyson Chandler to the Knicks for $58 Million, and talk of Nene staying at the Nuggets for a max contract. What was the point of the Lock Out again? EDIT: WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski The Hornets have started to inform teams that they're sending Chris Paul to the Lakers for Bynum and Odom, league sources tell Y! Sports.

Looks like it's a 3 team trade between Lakers, Hornets and Rockets, as follows (with a few draft picks involved) Lakers receive Chris Paul Hornets receive Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic Rockets receive Pau Gasol IMO, Lakers and Hornets 'win' from that and Rockets lose. EDIT: Emeka Okafor is possibly involved too, going to LA.

Stern block the trade after pressure from the owners!!! Paul is pissed and wont appear for training camp. I dont think it would of been that great a trade for LA righ tnow. They would give up all there bigs aside from Bynum who is a crock at the best of times, and then you have the problem of asking Kobe to share the ball in the back court. Then again, it would of cleared Pau's massive contract along with Odom's, and would therefore mean they would be under the cap enough to get Howard, which would of been worth sacrificing size for this season for inevitable success in years to come. No wonder Cubin and the rest of the owners had a bitch at Stern.

I do see the logic if Howard is a possibility, but I'd be disappointed to lose Odom - his range of shots and physical presence is good for the side, even if the reality show is an unwanted distraction. Gasol fair enough as his contract is foolish, Bynum and Artest too I wouldn't mind leaving. Still if you consider at Odom, Gasol, Bynum, Artest and Brown leaving a few vets, rookies, mediocrities and Bryant, Howard and Paul... while still needing more to fill the squad. It's not looking good. Shame that Lakers will hog all of the World Peace, strikes me as a massive bellwhiff.

Getting rid of Pau's contract was the key to them getting Howard in free agency I feel. They could of waived Bynum to make extra room and resigned Paul for less if they got him on board with their way of thinking. The would be major contenders still in the west just with those three and whatever they manage to put around them with mid levels and veteran minimum contracts, then Kobe's contract expires in two years and then they have cap space, Paul and Howard in their prime, and Kobe coming off the bench as an impact player. They would of been set for years to come.

Rip Hamilton to the Bulls. Paul trade is dead for the Lakers, may be considering the Clippers Odom to the Mavs Deandre Jordan to the Warriors for $10 million a year (LOL) Terrible stuff for the Lakers so far in this FA, even more so if they fail to get Howard.
