Ice Hockey Thread - 2011/12 Season 15 August 2011 13:39 (permalink)
I thought it was worth starting a new ice hockey thread for the 2011/12 season!! Last season there were a fair few interested in both NHL and British ice hockey. Welcome back anyway, it's been a long summer away from the British ice hockey scene and even without a team I can't wait for it to get underway once again. Here is the first part of my Elite League season preview for anyone interested:

Anyway, carry on!!

    Enjoying the preview mate.

For anyone new who doesn't know I'm a Tampa Bay Lightning / Hull Stingrays fan. I say Hull fan, I've been to Hull Ice Arena as many times as I've been to Tampas St. Pete Times Forum  Going to be following the elite league a lot more this season though.

          Oh wait

          Haha!! Aww

Hello hockey people!! Yup Elite League is going to be good this year I can feel it in me bones. Glad you like the preview! More today.

I'm a Calgary Flames fan for some reason. Turns out you shouldn't make such important decisions based on where you want to live. I shall have a soft spot for Winnipeg as well I imagine.

More sad news following the death of Rick Rypien - only 27. So sad

I am an armchair fan of ice hockey and will tend to follow it as a neutral. If anyone asks, I am a Pittsburgh Penguins fan for the NHL and a Sheffield Steelers fan for the British Ice Hockey League but, like Kris, I've seen the Sheffield Steelers at Sheff Arena as many times as I've seen the Pittsburgh Steelers live at Heinz Field!

I will definitely try and get into hockey more this season, especially the Sheffield Steelers as tickets are only £15 a piece for a home game. You can't go wrong with that!

Oh this too. I never really had a second NHL team but I think I will this season.

Ooh a Steelers fan! Hello! Excited to see your team this season. Hey Davey as well, I was supporting Nucks in the Cup, you'll have to try and go one better this season!

Second part of my preview is up now (link in my sig). We've also confirmed a couple of away trips (well I say 'away' trips - now we don't have a team they should really just be called 'trips').

Going to Braehead v Dundee on Sat 24th Sept, and Belfast v Fife, then v Cardiff on 11th & 12th November. Going to be goooood times.

Meanwhile we have a new Canadian sports bar opening in town, the Shark Club. It's the first one in the UK and we've already met with them regarding showing hockey and they are VERY keen. Hockey Night in Newcastle being planned already for 21st October!! Everyone should come!

Sad news for the human race let alone hockey fans:
Alex Ovechkin: Russian plane crash a ‘national tragedy’ By Katie Carrera
As details continue to emerge about the Russian plane crash that killed 44 people including most members of the Kontinental Hockey League’s Yaroslavl Lokomotiv, members of the Capitals expressed their shock and sadness.
Of the 45 people on board, 35 passengers and eight crew members, only a crew member survived.
Alex Ovechkin was noticably shaken when he spoke with reporters after a short workout at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. He was friends with Alexander Galimov, who was the lone player to survive the inital crash but died in a hospital after suffering severe burns over most of his body.
“I played with him when I was a little kid and again on national team, junior,” said Ovechkin, who was a teammate of Galimov’s in the 2005 World Junior Championships. “It’s kind of a scary moment. A national tragedy.”
Ovechkin found out from a friend just as he took to the ice this morning and immediately looked to verify reports and tell his fellow countrymen the news.
“I go to the internet see its true or not. It’s scary. I don’t know what to say,” Ovechkin said.
Tomas Vokoun, a Czech native, was distraught after hearing the news of the plane crash because one of his close friends was aboard the aircraft and asked to not speak with reporters, according to a team spokesman. The veteran goaltender played parts of seven seasons in Nashville and Florida with former NHLer Karlis Skrastins, who was believed to be aboard the flight.
Capitals prospect Stanislav Galiev was also in shock as he expressed his disbelief and sadness about the crash.
“I’m shocked it’s very sad. I had a couple good friends there from World Junior team, I played with them,” said Galiev, who said he knew Sergei Ostapchuk, Yuri Urychev and Daniil Sobchenko well. “You know travel every day [as an athlete]. You don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, it’s just life.”

Terrible terrible news about the KHL team, I was in the US when I head and I couldn't believe it. Just tragic.

Just catching up on the start of the season over here, have my first live game next week Braehead v Dundee, I can't wait!! Am literally bouncing with excitement about the new season! And all this without even having a team. I really am a hockey addict!

although it doesn't count, i think buffalo sabres had got to a good start in the off-season. Ryan Miller made a killer save agains toronto the other night. went into butterfly to save it once, Leaving a huge gap in the net, one of toronto's players made a second shot. Ryan Managed to reach over and do a glove save!

I  would love to see capitals lift the cup this year, but i've got some doubts that they'll crumble in the 1st or 2nd round of the finals

Potty fan ey?  What's your predictions for this season?

First Lightning League game of the season, playing Manchester Phoenix. Beat them at Coventry last season so why not tonight? Doubt it will happen though. Manchester I'd say for the league

I haven't managed to get to any phantoms games as of yet, Due to work and Playing the glorious sport myself, They haven't had a great start so far, their strongest goaltender didn't the start the season due to contractual disputes "apparently" so i can't really do a prediction on them at the moment. then again they've won 2 games so far, and it's only 3-4 games in. i can see the Nottingham panthers doing well again this year, david Clarke is such a great forward, to think he was passed in the NHL drafts for his size.

Happy with the Flyers' start to the season especially after the changes. Now Schenn is finally called up, so we can see what he can do.
Bison start is a bit disappointing. New import Dubec released today to rectify this.  Thought he looked a good penalty killer, but didn't really stand out at even strength.

Would not have predicted Columbus being the last team to get a win though. And what is happening in Coventry? Looks like there are a few players there not pulling their weight.

I'm washington capitals/Buffalo Sabres/vancouver Canucks fan also. Peterborough Phantoms in the EHL and Nottingham Panthers in the Elite League

although it doesn't count, i think buffalo sabres had got to a good start in the off-season.

Well we've got Potty this weekend, and no offence to you guys I'd say we're gonna win this comfortably. Got a good feeling about this year for Lightning, think this year will be the closest yet though. Phoenix have got off to a slow start surprisingly. Not gonna comment yet on my predictions for Lightning, don't wanna be too optimistic just gonna take it game by game but got a good feeling about this season.
