I can't decide whether this is good or bad news. On the one hand you get free food and beer, saves a fair bit of money. On the other hand, this could be a way to sell a few more tickets on a bad lineup??

Theres a catch somewhere we just dont know it yet. Festival Republic are one of the most penny pinching and useless companies going. There is no way that they would give out 180'000 ( ish ) burgers for free unless there was something in it for them. It's an interesting idea but I would rather see the £20 or so that it would cost to buy 3 pints and 3 burgers on site , taken off the ticket price

according to the report if they cant find a company willing to help with the cost, melvin benn will cover the cost himself, seems a bit unlike him from what ive heard, perhaps he's making up for last year lol

So he is willing to pay for hundreds of thousands of burgers , but he wasn't willing to pay to have the extra police presence on the Sunday night ( until the council latched on that it was getting pretty bad and FR were forced into doing something ) or to improve the campsite infrastructure ? Nice one Melv!

On the other hand, this could be a way to sell a few more tickets on a bad lineup?? I'd say you're half right. Not so much that they have a bad lineup, but it is definitely to try and sell a few more tickets and avoid the poor sales of last year. In all previous years I can remember it selling out within hours, whereas last year tickets were going for cheap closer to the date. Personally, I think this years lineup is gonna be amazing. Just have to wait and see...
Pep If you finish above us, I'll eat my shoe and wear a Villa shirt for the entire season. That's how confident I am.

Last years less than brilliant line up wasn't the only reason it didn't sell out , a lot of it was down to the sheer escalating cost of tickets without any noticable improvements within the site

I guess they've booked probably bands or split the days in a way that makes them think a lot of people will be opting for day tickets rather than weekend ones.

Im predicting an 'old indie' Friday, 'popular' Saturday and 'Rock' Sunday. I hope people are going for Day instead of Weekend because I want a weekend

Already bought a ticket, haven't been the last two years due to bad lineups - my thinking is they might have a fair bit of money for this year. Wasting it on free food and beer is making me nervous.

You gotta keep in mind it isn't going to cost Melvin Benn £4.25 for the pint and £5.50 for the burger. It's going to cost him around about £1, total. Still a lot of money to fork out on if he doesn't find a sponsor to do this (can't be that hard to persuade Carlsberg to do 1 free beer per customer a day, as most people, once they have one beer, will want a couple more, so should see sales increase). Also got to remember, of the 150,000 or so that go to Reading and Leeds, I'd say about half of those are under the age of 18, so won't be able to claim the beer token. Still a lot to give away and fork out for, but not as bad as suggested, considering it's about £3 per customer off of the ticket price to fund 3 beers and 3 burgers. Although the NME version of this story with an interview with Melvin Benn suggests it's just 1 beer and 1 burger, total. Not per day, just per weekend ticket.
