New Deftones Album 'Koi No Yokan' Due November 12th (UK) *UPDATED* 30 June 2012 00:03 (permalink)
“August 30, 2012 – Grammy-winning alternative rock band Deftones have announced the November 13th release of their seventh studio album, entitled KOI NO YOKAN. To support the release they will hit the road on a nationwide headlining tour, with special guest Scars On Broadway, which kicks off October 9th in Ventura, CA and will conclude on the West Coast mid November. Tickets on sale next Friday, September 7 via Ticketmaster.com.

KOI NO YOKAN was recorded in Los Angeles, CA with Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Rush) who also produced Diamond Eyes. Front man Chino Moreno summed up Deftones‘ sound in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying “Obviously we’re an aggressive band – not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack. He continues, “But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.”

From their 1994 debut Adrenaline to their platinum-certified, Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-winning breakthrough album White Pony, Deftones have continually crossed-over genres, defied categorization and delivered compelling live performances around the world. The Sacramento band’s 2010 release Diamond Eyes was named iTunes’ “Rock Album of the Year,” as well as KERRANG!’s 2010 Album of the Year. Diamond Eyes also graced many other critics and readers “Best Of” lists, including MySpace, AOL Noisecreep, Alternative Press, MOG, and Drowned In Sound.

Nearly four years ago, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng was in a car accident that put him in a coma and left him with severe brain trauma.

With one of their founding members fighting for his life, the Deftones were thrown into turmoil. They elected to soldier on — scrapping their in-progress album Eros, hiring bass player Sergio Vega (formerly of Quicksand), and putting out their fullest, most accomplished, and highest-charting album yet in 2010's Diamond Eyes.

With Cheng’s health slowly improving, the band rang in 2012 by hitting the studio and working steadily for six months. Their seventh album is nearly finished, and according to frontman Chino Moreno, will be an ideal distillation of the band’s strengths.

“Obviously we’re an aggressive band — not the heaviest, but there’s a lot of attack,” Moreno told EW. “But there’s also this lush beauty that flows within everything that we do, and that’s my favorite part of the band. To me, it’s the epitome of what the Deftones do.”

The band has finished writing and recording and plans on spending the next week or two mixing. That should keep them on track for their planned October 9 release date. But first, Moreno has to give everything a name:

“We have to have something to go on when we’re writing a song, and we always come up with a name so we can reference it, and usually it’s just the silliest thing off the top of the head,” Moreno said. “They usually comes from [drummer] Abe [Cunningham] or [guitarist] Stephen [Carpenter]. They name it, and usually it’s something outrageously dumb or an inside joke, and it forces me to come up with great song titles so those song titles will never live on. It’s much easier for me in hindsight to step back and look at it.”

For the second time, the band called in producer Nick Raskulinecz, who twiddled the knobs for Diamond Eyes and has also produced Foo Fighters, Rush, Evanescence, and Alice in Chains. “He’s a very hands-on guy,” Moreno said. “We adopted a work ethic that was really productive on the last record. We said we were going to work eight hours a day, and since we had those hours, everybody in there was super focused. Before that we had been working up in Sacramento, and the vibe was everybody would come in and hang out and we would work when we got around to it. We had to get more efficient.”

Once the mixing, titles, and artwork are complete, there will only be one thing left for the band to do: the covers. Since their 1995 debut Adrenaline, Deftones have always wrapped up their sessions by recording a handful of other artists’ songs, some of which were collected on last year’s Record Store Day Exclusive vinyl Covers.

They’ve taken on Sade, the Smiths, the Cardigans, and Duran Duran and this time around they plan on going even deeper into the canon. “We’ve done a lot of ’80s stuff, but we wanted to do something from farther back,” Moreno explained. “We sat down and everybody had their computers on and were playing songs that we like. So we’re going to do an Elvis Presley song — we have five Elvis songs that we’ve been talking about. And we’re going to do Earth, Wind, and Fire. Hopefully we’ll get at least two, maybe three or four.”

“It’s always fun,” he says. “We’re done with the real creative part of having to come up with music out of thin air, and now we can be experimental with someone else’s song.”

Deftones Racing Through Next Album, Hoping for October Release

Mixing for Deftones' next album is under way, and frontman Chino Moreno says the California heavy rockers caught a full range of sound for this venture.

"It's not a super fast or slow record. It's very dynamic," Moreno tells Billboard.com. "Some of my favorite things about Deftones are the dynamics. Yes, we're a heavy band, but we're not just in-your-face aggro the whole time, punching you in the face. There's a lot of aggression in some of the music, but there's also this very soothing element where there's a lot of soundscapes rather than attack, attack, attack the whole time. I understand that's a big part of our sound, but I really feel like we reached a peak on our dynamics on this record with those two qualities -- the beauty of something and just straight, ruthless aggression."

Moreno says Deftones also approached the as-yet-untitled album -- which was produced by Nick Raskulinecz with a hoped-for early October release date -- with a certain kind of work ethic in mind.

"It was important that we wanted to not drag it out," he says. "We have a well-documented history of taking forever to make records. But with our last record (2010's 'Diamond Eyes') we did it in a really short, good amount of time, probably four or five months from the time we started writing until we finished it. For us, that was record time, so this time the idea was, 'Let's go in and start a record on this date and let's try to be finished by summertime and keep this work ethic we kind of stumbled upon on the last one,' and we did."

Moreno says the new album is marked by greater contributions from bassist Sergio Vega -- still filling in for Chi Cheng, who continues to recover from a 2008 automobile accident that left him in a coma -- and also by a more collective approach to the writing process. "Everybody came in together and someone would start playing something and another person would join in and then another person, so the songs were really built with us together in the room at the same time," Moreno explains. "I think it's a very honest record because it's not anything pre-conceived. We didn't come in thinking, 'It's gonna be like this' or 'It's gonna be like that.' It's just us hanging out as friends and playing, making something out of nothing."

Deftones begin a short tour with System of a Down on Aug. 2 in Camden, N.J., and will also play Slipknot's Knotfest events on Aug. 17-18 in Iowa and Wisconsin, respectively. Moreno expects a full tour in support of the new album around the time it's released.

Meanwhile, Moreno is helping Team Sleep cohort Todd Wilkinson with a solo album and is also getting ready to record vocals for Palms, a new band he's formed with former members of the Boston metal band Isis. "The music's all been recorded and everything, and obviously I"ve been engulfed in the Deftones record. But I told them as soon as I was done, we would record the vocal stuff," says Moreno. A six-song EP is planned, but he notes that "the songs are long as hell, so it's like a full LP. I don't know what it'll be like or when it's going to be done or released, but it's a project I think is pretty rad."

Can't wait for this, they have become one of my favourite bands over the last couple of years. So will be hoping they do another UK gig so I can do a few dates.

Plus, got my Deftones tattoo booked for next month

Diamond Eyes was a damn fine record (my joint fave Deftones album), and if they're excited to follow it up so soon, I'm hoping we get more of the same.

These might well include songs associated with Elvis Presley and Earth, Wind & Fire. And the band’s new, as yet untitled album is due out in mid-October.

Whenever i hear band recording a covers album it always worries me a bit they are a little bored, struggling for ideas and not truly invested in their own material which never bodes well.

However i have yet to hear hound dog, heatbreak hotel or all shook up at download - could be interesting. different at least.

Leaving it rather late to start promotion for an October 8th release.

Have they ditched it in favour of the elvis covers? Nothing wrong with bands trying new directions
