I was just wondering if anyone else has ever read this great book. The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart I picked it up years and years ago when the Times newspaper was doing a book for a £1 with every paper purchased. I absolutely loved it and to this day re-read it all the time. I never knew of anyone else who had heard of it though unless I introduced them to it.

I lent my copy to a mate years ago and then he to the phillipines and I never got it back!!! I did consider writing out a "12 ways to punish the bloody thief" list and seeing what happened but he is a really good mate Amazing book though it really is, but avoid the sequel "search or the Diceman" it's a massive disapointment. Also - I'm amazed it's never been made into a film.....

The sequel was tame compared to The Dice Man.

I found this on a dusty bookshelf at home when I was a child and couldn't understand much of it - I read it a few years back and thought it was amazing. One of my favourites - it did have me daydreaming about leading a 'dice life' for a while... [/:)] Time to re-read it methinks.
Today I am dirty - tomorrow I'll be just dirt.

Surely if you made each option feasible & carry through with it - it can be enjoyable.

xXxJeNxXx Surely if you made each option feasible & carry through with it - it can be enjoyable. I had two options in the initial session. 1-3 with a single dice i would be happy. 4-6 i would be angry. I rolled a 5 and had nothing to be angry about and thus i resorted to opening old arguements for a period of 1hour. Bear in mind i couldn't just sit at home being annoyed i had to be angry at or with someone.

Batlocust Surely if you made each option feasible & carry through with it - it can be enjoyable. I seem to remember that there are three principles of living by the dice: 1. You must be prepared to undertake all of the options. 2. Once selected, start the option without question. 3. Think macro, not micro. In other words - think big and be daring. I never actually finished the book as I found it rather dull but the idea of leaving all of life's big decisions to chance is intriguing.

I got a friend to read it, he loved it, then spent a night out shifting his personality for 10 minute stints using 6 options. He did it really well. No one cottoned on at all. It was hilarious! Poor guy got a Jesus-esque personality 3 times in a row.

Bit of a headfuck of a book, I thought. An awful lot of it was kinda just psychobabble, to me anyway, so perhaps some of the finer points were lost on me.

It's supposed to be exactly that though, psychobabble... it's anti-psychiatry and psychoanalysis so a lot of it is there for satirical purposes.

borrowed it from a friend at the end of last summer. A fantastic book, very clever. Love how it's done as if it was real as well! I was also thinking it would make a cool film, very hard to do though.

Thus giving the impression it was something each craved for a while so the options were really "To act upon the urges or not to"

I pose one little question about the book being read or not and a small debate sparks. THAT'S how good the book is
