Slaughter house 5 is my favourite book of all time too.... (it's a pretty good film, made in the 70's, bought it on Amazon recently after finding out that Vonnegut himself had described it as "perfect" and although there are bits from the book that I really wanted to see but weren't it's still a very well done adaptation )

Kurt Vonnegut in the novel "Slaughterhouse Five" is one of those great books that defies easy categorization. A combination of science fiction, satire, fantasy war, and all the fun and dark. The book tells the story of Billy Pilgrim, an optometrist, World War II veteran, and seem to UFO abductee who becomes "failed in a timely manner." We accompany Billy back and forth from experiences in the wartime meetings with foreigners and other events in his life significantly.

"Slaughterhouse" and revived to a large extent by the colorful, rich and imagined cast of supporting characters: American-turned-Nazi Howard W. Campbell, movie star Wildhack Montana, and more. But perhaps the most ringing of these things is surprisingly Kilgore Trout, and appreciation of science fiction writer.
In this book there is a reference to Stephen Crane's curiosity classic "The Red Medal of Courage," perhaps this reference is a way to connect directly with the tradition of Vonnegut fiction of the American war. But this book transcends that genre. "Slaughterhouse Five" is sad, surreal, whimsical, brutal, and surprisingly nice. He was a wonderful book, and I recommend it. The accompanying text, interesting, and try to "things that have been implemented," Tim O'Brien excellent book about the Vietnam War.
Defeat is not bitter unless you swallow it.

Have to my shame only read "Slaughterhouse Five." Althought it is a stonking read and I read it as a holiday book. While most around the pool were engrossed in Dan Brown I had my Epic second world war parable/history/science ficton novel to bury myself in. Awesomesaucesome!

Just finished Slaughterhouse Five and really liked.
I'll buy Cat's Cradle or Breakfast of Champions next time I'm in town.
