My sister has a kindle, but I'm not convinced. There's nothing quite like the feel and smell of a new book. :)

tiny_t18 I know this is quite an old thread but how is the glare on the screens on one if I wanted to read outside if I was on holiday or something? Glare is not an issue. The screen is 99% like looking at a printed sheet of paper.

These things are the way forward - that's certain. I really HATE the idea of losing real books and won't be getting one...

When the Kindle comes out with a way of emitting new book smell, then I'll consider it.

It just seems more practical to me, I have the new iPhone and therefore iBooks but it's impossible to read on a train or a bus and I travel via train and plane and between 3 houses so carrying books about is just exercise more than anything, I just wish there was a way of getting books I already own onto the kindle so I don't have to buy them again.

I have a friend with one of these and I have to say that getting it to read to you is highly amusing. It sounds like steven Hawkins....very tempting to make it read an erotic scene for the giggles. Anyways, I am thinking of getting one but only after I have finished my Simon Pegg autobiography and the first book in the Game of thrones series otherwise I will Probably get distracted and not read them. Anyone know whats its like on getting availability on more unknown authors, or is it more popular literature that you can get?

The 'Song of Ice and Fire' series are really good if you liked Game of Thrones as a TV series, it was so accurate, anyway won't spoil it for you! I've decided not to get a Kindle now as the iPad 3 has been announced and will be out around December with a screen resolution better than a HD tv, which means it's going to be clearer to look at that than a real book. Plus the store has more books on it!

I only watched the first couple of episodes( I tend to do this then get them on DVD and watch over a weekend) I saw Lady die :( and decided I need the book to make sure that the Queen gets hers! I am not a fan of ipods, phones ect cause I hate the apple softwear. I only own an ipod cause it was free and I havent really updated my music in a time cause I cannot be bothered fighting with itunes. I may get a Kindle then any books I really want that they dont have...I can always go old school and get the book hahaha

The Kindle is fantastic, it's very easy to read, comfortable and light to hold for hours at a time. The only real annoying point on it is the little buttons that flick through the pages, my fat thumbs hit them quite often so I will skip on a page when I don't mean to. The battery life is superb (my has been on everyday since I got it 2 months ago, and I've charged it 5 times maybe?). It can't replace the feel of area book, and for things like textbooks and encyclopedia's its next to useless as it can not replicate the images, but as an easy store for paperbacks it is brilliant.

I like the Kindle but I sometimes find that the eBooks are the same price or more expensive than the normal ones! (they're not VAT exempt) That's really annoying. The .pdf function is quite poor as well. I find it's very handy for holidays or trips away though as I used to fill my luggage with books and now I don't need to :)

Wow old thread, but personally I don;t like them, my mum has one, my brother has one, and my step sister has one, I won't be investing into one, I just prefer books too much, I mean they are handy but I just can't see me getting used to. I also like having a little library in my room, what would I put on my bookcase if I had a kindle? The kindle and it's box ;L

my family got together to buy me a kindle fire hd for my 40th birthday. it's amazing! i love it to bits. i used to read avidly but i lost the ability to read from a book a few years bavck. my line of sight jumps lines and i can't focus well and the white pagesand black text caused fuzziness so i am seriously over the moon to be able to read again. i set the page colour to cream, no glare and use extra large text which means i have to swipe the screen to turn the page a lot. i also get quite ill sometimes and stay days on end in bed. no laptop so being able to use the kindle l8ike a tablet and watch iplayer, get into facebook, open my emails, you tube, etc is just life changing for me. i don't know how many free books i have downloaded! then bought a bunch after christmas with the amazon vouchers i was given. joined audible as a gift to myself and considering a netflix subscription.

What's audible like? I'm Glad you can read again I think it makes your life fuller, like sleeping without dreams, it's just not the same.

i haven't been read to for a very long time so it takes some getting used to. it felt very strange at first. i get one credit a month for £8. i credit buys any 1 book. i have enjoyed some more than others depending on the narrator but they are always very good audio quality. they do have an exchange thing that if you really hate a book you can choose another instead. you can buy books at their rrp too but they are expensive. they had a sale recently so i grabbed a few at decently low prices. the new release popular books can range up to £40 but there's a wide range of lower priced ones too. i really hate that they are now splittling books up into 2 parts. for instance partick rothfuss name of the wind they split into part1 and part 2 so i either had to buy part 1 one month and the last half the month after using the credit system or use my credit and then pay the rrp for the second part, which was £29.99 at the time!! a ridiculous price for one audio book and i'd never pay that no matter how much i was desperate. now his next book is on audible and i've finished the 1st part of it and am waiting until next month to get the other half! i don't know of any other audio book clubs so there is no competition to push prices lower so until there is i'll be stuck playing the waiting game with audible. i don't know what i'd do without my kindle! used daily and brought a lot of joy back to my life, the ability to go off escaping into a story makes everything else bearable!

Not really expensive if you look around. Theres tons of free books on kindle (which I use through the free IPad app and android app). Quite often newer authors will give out their first books free or the first in a series free. if its something im particularly liking I just add it to my Amazon wishlist to watch the price then pick it up when its cheep. Think ive probably only bought 3-5 books that have been paid for (the Millenium Series by Stieg Larson books 2 and 3, and a few at 20p a book) Audible does sound very pricy though - we were looking into it for my mum (she had a stroke and cant read anymore as she doesnt understand the words in addition to being partially blind after the stroke as well). Reading was pretty much her only hobby before the stroke as well. We ended up finding out you can put MP3 files onto the kindle though (shes using my dads old model (2 before the paperwhite) so dad rips the audio cd's that she gets sent through the post from the RNIB and transfers those to her kindle. Not sure if your registered blind or partially sighted Silverheart but it may be worth you looking into. They send out 5 disks at a time and send more out when you return them (if you send 2 back they send another 2 out so you always have 5 books) and if a book is across 2 disks they send them together as "one book".
To err is human to forgive is divine!
